Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery was opened in 1971 as part of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. It was built on land that originally belonged to St. Joseph College Seminary. When the Diocese of San José was established in 1981, comprising all of Santa Clara County, the new diocese took ownership of the cemetery. Gate of Heaven now serves the entire Catholic community of the Diocese of San José.
