Goodale Cemetery
Orrington, Penobscot County, Maine, USA
The Goodale Cemetery is located near the site of early settler Ephraim Goodale's homestead on Kings' Mountain in Orrington. This area was originally located in Buckstown (later Bucksport), in Hancock County, but became part of Orrington in Penobscot County when town/county lines were re-drawn in 1821.
Covering one-fifth of an acre, it is located on private property along a discontinued town road, the Goodale Road.
A sign erected at the head of the road in the mid-1970s declared that the earliest burial dated to 1796, but no grave marker exists with a date that early. The sign has since decayed and toppled, and the road is unmarked.
The cemetery itself is in poor condition, with nearly all stones either leaning or toppled, and many of the toppled stones are broken.
Numerous grave sites are marked only with flat fieldstones standing on end, while other burial sites are identifiable only by sunken hollows in the ground.
The side of the cemetery facing the road features early 20th-century ornamental welded-wire fencing; the remaining three sides are made from page wire, intended to keep livestock out of the cemetery many years ago, when the surrounding forest was pasture land. A gate, no longer necessary to enter the cemetery (much of the fencing has fallen), leans against a large oak tree on the perimeter.
The Orrington Historical Society is actively seeking volunteers to donate labor and materials to improve this neglected burial ground and honor those early town residents interred within.
