Originally, the inhabitants of the Hellendoorn parish were buried in or around the old village church. Due to a change in governmental regulations, this practice was no longer allowed and the municipal authorities had to look for a new burial ground. They bought a piece of land, locally known as the "Vennekaamp", just outside of the built-up area.
In 1829 the first burial took place and over the years around 2,500 people were buried here. In 1897 the cemetery became full and a new cemetery on the Ninaberlaan was taken in use.
The old cemetery fell in decline over the next decades, until in 1996 a group of volunteers assembled who started a foundation to restore the old cemetery.
