These graves are within 4/10th of a mile of the Captain Smith Cemetery and the graves located here occurred before the Captain Smith Cemetery was created. It is said that this location was chosen for a family cemetery but for some reason burials here stopped and the Captain Smith Cemetery started to be used instead. This cemetery is located below the bluff and you have to go up a very steep hill to reach this area, so perhaps this was the reason they stopped using this location for burials. Some of the graves located here had tombstones and some of the tombstones were moved to the Captain Smith Cemetery, although the remains were not moved. A granite marker was erected here in 2018 to mark the location of these graves.

DIRECTIONS: From Witter, continue South on Highway 23 for 1 mile; turn right on County Road 5250. This is a very narrow road and crosses War Eagle River, and winds around and through hayfields. You will come to a flagstone house. You should obtain permission from the landowner before going any further. You must go through the farm gate to the left of the flagstone house which has a No Trespassing sign on it because the owners have had problems with hunters. To find these graves, go through gate and continue on the road for 400 feet. You will see a metal barn on the right and you should park here. Walk up the hill to the right of the barn and go about 600 feet to the northwest. The graves are on a level area about 75 feet from the bluff-line.
