After township Burunday was renamed to Boralday cemetery was still widely known under its original name.
Burunday cemetery is also know as Zapadnoye (Western) or Batys.
It is one of the largest Almaty cemetery with territory of 40 hectares or 98.8 acres.
There are separate sectors for burial of Muslims and Christians. There are also separate sectors for burials of children and section X for unclaimed remains. It is unknown how many people found their last refuge in X section.
Each burial site in X section is marked with wooden pole with attached to it zinc token with number.
There are no roads in X section because it was never meant to be visited.
Burials at the nameless X sector of the Burunday cemetery takes place twice a week. On Wednesdays and Fridays six deceased are brought in for burial.Total 12 people per week. No one knows what religion or class deceased was in life. Everyone are buried in a wooden coffin. As of June 2018 the state of Kazakhstan allocates 10 thousand tenge or 26 USD for burial of each unknown person.
