Chulmleigh Congregational Church was built in 1633 and the building, with some of its original features, stands to this day. It was built by Lewis Stucley, on land given by John Bowring, who was a Chulmleigh wool merchant. It is recorded that he 'dedicated a portion of his gains to the service of God by employing men of acknowledged Protestant principles and piety'. The interior walls of the church are covered with an array of interesting plaques, commemorating people and families through the generations, the oldest commemorating the building of the church.
The church is reputedly the second oldest non-conformist churches in the country and significantly has been used continuously as a place of worship ever since.
In 1836 the church was extended to provided a schoolroom, financed partly by a government grant of £50.
Today the church has a membership of 4, with an average weekly congregation of 15.
