In 1789 a small Baptists Chapel was opened on Masborough Common. It is described as being "..Little more than a Workingman's cottage.", holding no more than a hundred people.
Benjamin Dickinson from Halifax was the first minister, and the Sheffield Baptists who had closed their chapel because they had no regular Pastor, walked to Rotherham every Sunday for Eleven Years to worship at Rotherham.
The River Don was used for baptisms and it is recorded that on one occasion ice had to be broken at Rotherham Bridge for immersion.
The Chaperl closed in 1836 when a new Baptists Chapel was opened on Westgate, this is now used by the Elim Pentecostal Church.
By the side of the Chapel was "Gods own Acre", a burial ground, still there and maintained. The houses by its side were built in 1938, after the old Chapel was demolished in 1937.
The small burial ground has seven graves :-
James Hudson, Master Painter, who died in 1854. He was one of the founders of the Westgate Chapel.
Thomas Palfreyman, who opened Ironstone mines at Kimberworth. Died in 1828, aged 80.
The earliest date is 1791, the latest is 1854.
The youngest person is 4 months and the oldest is 95 years.
