Alexander and Mary Scobie and their children moved into the area in 1879 and the station was originally called New Well. They began the store to supply travellers along the Birdsville Track. Retiring in 1915, their sons ran the station and store until they sold in 1923 to George and Mabel Aiston.
George was a retired police officer and during his career he combined his duties with those of Aboriginal Welfare Officer and over time accumulated a valuable collection of artefacts which he housed in a large room in the store. He died in 1943 (Broken Hill Cemetery) and his wife donated the collection to the museum in 1953 when she retired from the store and moved south dying in 1958 (North Rd Cemetery)
