The Page family had set out from Marree for Birdsville on 21st December. They lost the track, ran out of fuel and then attempted to walk south after leaving a note with the car. The car and note were found by the next person that passed and their bodies were then spotted by a light aircraft on new years day under a small tree next to the dry Coocherapoonie waterhole. Authorities believe they died from thirst.
The family of five were buried near the coolibah tree and a headstone was erected in 2010.
