On June 7, 1855, coming from St. Thomas in the Caribbean, the Steamship the Benjamin Franklin came to Portsmouth in need of repairs on her way to New York City. It is believed that this ship brought mosquitoes carrying the Yellow Fever which then spread quickly through Norfolk and Portsmouth. At the end of the epidemic, 3,000 lives were lost.
