The former independent village of Briesnitz has buried its dead at this location for about 1000 years. The original cemetery was were now the Meißner Landstrasse is. The old church dates back to the 13th century and now sits within what's known as the "Innerer Briesnitzer Friedhof", the older of the two still in existence in this part of Dresden. By the middle of the 19th century the grave yard was almost used to capacity and the city opened a new cemetery further west, called the "Äußerer Briesnitzer Friedhof" in 1879.
The cemetery chapel was built around 1896 and the cemetery was once again enlarged, this time to the north.
The cemetery has several War Memorials with the names and sometimes dates of soldiers from this town, who died during the wars of the past two centuries. Most of them are missing in action and their bodies have never been found and returned to their families. They are not buried here, but remembered on these war memorial plaques and monuments.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (about 20 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse can decompose naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period, the duration can be extended by another 15-20 years. Otherwise, the grave will be leveled and reused, the marker then used as gravel in road construction. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever. Also, the town or owner of the cemetery might find a grave of historical significance and will protect and keep it indefinitely.
