Saint Paul Parish was the first Roman Catholic church founded in the southernmost district of the former Philadelphia County, which at the time, was known as the Moyamensing District. Under the authority of Bishop Francis Patrick Kenrick of Philadelphia, the church was officially established in 1843 under the pastorship of Patrick F. Sheridan.

Upon Reverend Sheridan's death in 1879, he was interred on the church grounds. In 2025, he was subsequently removed to the Priests' Section at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon.
