Organized in 1792 as an outgrowth of the Free African Society (founded in 1787), the original church, under the ministration of Reverend Absalom Jones, a former slave, became the nation's first Black priest in the Episcopal Church.


Remains from the church's now-defunct burial ground, including those of Reverend Jones, were first removed to the now-defunct Lebanon Cemetery in Philadelphia in 1887, and then to Eden Cemetery in Collingdale, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, in 1903, when Lebanon Cemetery was condemned.


Today, the church, now located in the Overbrook section of the city, maintains a columbarium with the cremated remains of Reverend Jones and others.
