On June 12, 1796, twenty of Philadelphia's intellectual leaders formed the First Unitarian Society of Philadelphia, becoming the first continuously functioning church in the country to call itself "Unitarian." The small but growing congregation built an octagonal-shaped church at 10th and Locust Streets in 1813. A second building, dedicated in 1828, was constructed on the same site. It remained the congregation's worship space until it moved to its present site at 2125 Chestnut Street in 1885.

The Memorial Garden is a space set aside for the interment of the cremated remains of Church members and friends, their partners, and families. The Garden is located on the west side of the Church, facing Chestnut Street. It has been landscaped; a flowering dogwood tree and a small bench encourage contemplation.

The Memorial Garden should not be confused with the congregation's original cemetery, which was moved to West Laurel Hill Cemetery in the late 19th century.
