This abandoned but picturesque cemetery sits above the high water line along the LaHave River.
Access is by foot along the beach at low tide and by boat at high tide. Drive to the end of Five Houses Road and park in the space before you cross a private driveway. You will see where there is a minor slope down to the beach; walk along until you see the stones behind some trees and high grass.
This cemetery is also known as the Oxner Cemetery and the Five Houses Pioneer Cemetery. Although burials were of an earlier date here it was officially established in 1789.
The first five settlers were Johann Caspar Heckman, Johann Nicholas Reinhard, Johann Michael Schmidt, Johann Henry Vogler and Johann Leonard Uhrig.
These immigrants were only 5 of the many families who were given land grants in Lunenburg County in return for establishing these communities. They were hard working men and women who, in addition to building their homes, establishing fruitful gardens, raising children and going out to sea, had to protect themselves from enemies.
In 1931 several people made a record of the burials here and determined there are others; this community was within the District of LaHave and you will find that a Death Certificate may state the burial is in LaHave when in fact it is in Five Houses Cemetery.
In 1976 a group of citizens undertook a cleanup, planted hay and erected a new sign; the sign is barely legible now. (2022)
