The Royal Hospital Haslar opened in October 1753 and from that date all those who died either at Haslar, aboard ships in Portsmouth Harbour or at Spithead were interred in the grounds of the hospital.

The cemetery eventually closed in April 1859 when interments were then made at Clayhall Naval Cemetery.
