This was the first cemetery in Holzhausen and was probably established in the 13th century. This cemetery was closed in 1628 because a second one had been opened further south (at Händelstraße 2).

During the Battle of the Nations in October 1813, the old cemetery was fiercely contested due to its location. The church burned down and was not rebuilt until 1818. Holzhausen suffered heavy destruction and took decades to rebuild. A third cemetery (Stötteritzer Landstraße 2) was established in 1876, and the second one was closed.
