Charlton Cemetery is on private property. Without approval from Dr. T. White (landowner) entry is prohibited by law.
"Charlton" is a rural property originally taken up by Thomas Arkell.
After his death in 1848, his son-in-law inherited it (Charles MacPhillamy) and then his son Harold MacPhillamy inherited it in 1906, and then his son Bill.
After Bill's death, "Charlton" was sold to Cliff & Ona White in 1963. Their son Ross got it in 1983 after Cliff's death and then his son Tim got it in 2020 because Ross retired.
"Charlton" was originally taken up by Thomas Arkell in 1821. Back then, it was made of 1000 acres. The homestead was completed by 1823 and is still standing.
Unauthorised entry is also prohibited.
The 1828 census lists 20 residents at the property. The census is on the cemetery photos.
The Charlton Cemetery has 29 documented burials. There are only 2 legible headstones belonging to Ann West and Emily E. Cole.
"Charlton" was at one time 5000 acres in area. It is now around 1700. The farm is home to cattle.
