Cold Water Cemetery is in north St. Louis County, Missouri, just one mile north of Highway 140 on Old Halls Ferry Road. Hidden away in a shaded spot in the center of the rapidly growing suburban area of Florissant, Missouri, is Cold Water Cemetery, a little jewel, quaint and interesting, and the very mischief to find. It is on the Old Hallsferry Road, atop a hill, and surrounded by large depressions in the land, locally called "The Sinks." Cold Water Cemetery (CWC) is considered by historians to be the oldest Protestant cemetery west of the Mississippi River still in use. Located in Florissant Valley in St. Louis County, it was originally the Patterson family burial ground, established on a small portion of the 1500 arpents (an arpent is a French measurement almost equal to an acre), of a land grant acquired from it was given to Patriot John Patterson, an American Revolutionary War soldier who is buried there. This small cemetery is owned and maintained by the Missouri State Daughters of the American Revolution, Booneville, MO. Twenty-nine veterans from nine wars that wore the "cloth of our Nation" are interred at Cold Water Cemetery. As part of the annual Memorial Day services, the Missouri State Society Daughters of the American Revolution honors the soldiers and pioneers in Cold Water Cemetery and throughout our country. It is on the National Register of Historic Places as of 2004.
