This cemetery was established in 1760 as the Hallock Family Burial Ground. By 1780, due to the long history of the Quaker community in Milton, Ulster County, NY, it became known as The Quaker Cemetery as more people were buried here. However, in 1828, there was a nationwide division of the Quaker community due to many Quakers choosing to follow the more liberal teachings of Elias Hicks. The more liberal Quakers then became known as Hicksites.
Some time between 1828 and 1830, a follower of the Hicksite Quaker beliefs died and was buried in this existing, original Quaker Cemetery. This upset the more orthodox Quakers who did not want to be buried beside the Hicksites. Therefore in 1830, a 2nd Quaker cemetery was opened for the orthodox Quakers. After 1830, this original Quaker cemetery became known as the "Hicksite Cemetery" and the new cemetery became known as the "Friends Cemetery". In books written after this divide, this cemetery is also referenced as "Friends Ground, No. 1" while the newer cemetery which opened in 1830 is referenced as "Friends Ground, No. 2".
