This site was an overflow cemetery used by St Martin's in the Fields Church. The last burials there were in 1853. Charles Dickens later wrote about visiting it as a boy. It was accessible through a "low passage under a house". Its desolate character led him later to use it as the basis for the graveyard in which Nemo is buried in Bleak House (published in 1852).


The founder of the National Trust, Octavia Hill, caused the cemetery to be converted into a garden for the public in 1877. It is now mostly a playground. However, even though it was cleared as a cemetery 150 years ago, there are still a few gravestones along part of the northern boundary of the site. Almost all are illegible.
