Buurkerk Begraafsplaats
Egmond-Binnen, Bergen Municipality, Noord-Holland, Netherlands
The Protestant Church of Egmond-Binnen, next to the Egmond Abbey, is in a historically important location. The church is locally called the "Neighbouring Church", after its medieval predecessor. The current church was built in 1836, according to a design by the master builder Hermanus H. Dansdorp (1788-1873), on the initiative of the local craftswoman. The church stands on the spot where one of the towers of the abbey church used to stand, which was destroyed by Orange-minded troops in 1573, as well as the abbey itself. Close to the current location stood the previous medieval Buurkerk, also largely destroyed by the Beggars in 1573. Protestant residents of Egmond-Binnen went to church in the more or less intact choir. At the beginning of the 18th century, the remains of the old Buurkerk were demolished, as were the remains of the abbey and abbey church. The small hall church, built in 1836, originally had no tower but a wooden roof turret. The building was plastered white. In 1914, the building was demolished one meter above ground level and rebuilt in brick, this time with a tower. The church is beautifully situated on a spacious, partly fenced site, being the beach wall on which the old abbey and abbey church were also located.
Beside the church there are 3 graveyards, the first is a new one and located near the church. The second cemetery is about 100 m in the north near the church, with several old graves from the 17th century. The abbey cemetery is also next to the church in a northeasterly direction.
