In 1870 John Hayden sold 9/10 of an acre of his land for a Wesleyan Methodist Church and Cemetery. One-half acre of that parcel was reserved for the burial ground. The earliest known burial is that of a child by the name of Rowe in 1865 which occurred not long after he received his land patent in 1864, and well before a church was erected and a formal burial ground established.
By 1884 the church had closed and the membership transferred to Mayne Methodist in Wallace Township, Perth County. By 1962 the church building was gone and the cemetery was abandoned. A landowner later removed the grave markers and piled them along a fence row so that he could cultivate crops on what had been the church and cemetery grounds.
In July 1982 thirteen grave markers were laid out and carefully transcribed by Carole Marcelle, Barbara Hayden, Russell and Phyllis Hayden from the Huron County Branch OGS. There were two broken stone pieces indicative of at least one additional marker, but it contained no inscription. The surnames: Cook, Grasley, Husband, Jackson, Lambkin, Rowe, Self, Shephard.
Today there is a small sign posted, visible from the road which reads "Howick - Methodist Cemetery. Established 1865".
