Additional information
∼At the beginning of the 20th century, the growth of the textile industry led to the founding of a new parish on the right bank of the Ems River. Inspired by Dean Pietz (1840-1915), Johann Franz Klomp (1865-1946) designed what is probably the most elaborate church building of the final phase of Historicism in Germany. The church was consecrated on April 4, 1904: a replica of the Romanesque collegiate church of St. Michael in Hildesheim – with the tallest church tower in the Münsterland region at 102.5 meters – the St. Anthony Chapel and the baptistery, painted by Carl Wenzel – a crypt modeled after Roman catacombs by Friedrich Stummel – a large nativity scene is displayed from December 25 to January 25, and the crypt houses an archive on the church's architectural and religious history.
