Cattedrale di San Francesco
Livorno, Provincia di Livorno, Toscana, Italy
Livorno Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of San Francesco, is the main Catholic place of worship in Livorno and the mother church of the diocese of the same name.
It was designed at the same time as the pentagonal city commissioned by the Medici family in the 16th century, crowning the southern façade of the Piazza Grande. It echoed the loggia theme of the city, harmoniously blending with the adjacent porticoes. Enlarged during the 18th century and featuring rich furnishings donated by the Grand Ducal family and members of its circle, it suffered extensive damage during the air raids of World War II, after which it was largely rebuilt.
