The burial ground of Millbank Prison was originally a small plot on the prison grounds. However, following overcrowding and disease during the cholera outbreak of 1848, it was closed. Afterward, the bodies of convicts who died in the prison were interred at Victoria Park Cemetery in Mile End.

The prison's internal burial ground was an oblong plot of land enclosed by low black iron rails and marked by a solitary elder-tree. After it was closed and the prison eventually demolished, the site was redeveloped. Today, the renowned Tate Britain gallery sits on portions of the former Millbank Penitentiary site.
