"I have many fond memories of the cemetery area. As a 12-year old I often
fished from the barge that was anchored on the other side of the road
that leads to the cemetery. My skiff was tied to the bank just below the
cemetery."
".....the road that leads to the cemetery was the original Galveston/Houston highway.
There was a bridge across Clear
Creek at the cemetery. As a teenager my father used to guide cars across
the bridge when the river was flooded and the bridge was under water.
The kids charged the drivers 10 cents per car.
The road running along side the cemetery and dead-ending at the creek
was the Galveston/Houston road when my father was a child. The pier you
mention was used to tie up barges that carried oyster shells, gravel and
sand to League City. The oyster shells came from Galveston Bay and were
used to surface the roads (we did not graveled roads when I was a
teenager in the 1950s).
In the distance in your photo of the cemetery and creek you can see the
highway that crosses Clear Creek. This is where I first saw the creek in
1948."
