Founded as Odd Fellows Rural Cemetery in the mid 1850s; the oldest known burial was that of Mary Leslie who died in 1841, but her remains were move from land owned by her husband to the family plot he purchased when it opened. After World War II, Odd Fellows ceased burials and they gave up its care. It fell into disrepair until 1949 when a group of Salem residents and relatives formed the Salem Pioneer Association to raise funds for its care and maintenance. They changed the name to Salem Pioneer Cemetery and had sporadic success. It wasn't until 1986 when the deed was turned over to the Chemeketa Lodge No 1, IOOF. who maintains it to this date.
