Ocean View Cemetery (historically known as Clatsop Cemetery) Ocean View Cemetery is a 70-acre active cemetery located at 575 S. W. 18th Avenue, Warrenton, Oregon. It is owned by the City of Astoria, which is about eight miles to the east. About 30 acres are currently undeveloped. The grounds are on the west side of Cemetery Lake and, in early years before the large evergreen trees to the west of the cemetery, one could see the Pacific Ocean. This is a beautiful cemetery with lake views and wildlife. It is the largest cemetery in Clatsop County. Burials from older Astoria cemeteries have been moved to Ocean View: the earliest memorial markers have death dates in the 1860s. The property contains the Ocean View Abbey: a mausoleum which was privately built in the 1920s. The present chapel building was built in 1953 to replace a pentagon shaped wooden structure. Also no longer existing is Cemetery house which was built (without insulation) for the caretaker in 1938. In 1882, the city of Astoria purchased 71.18 acres of land at what was then called Skipanon for a new city cemetery. It was originally known as Clatsop Cemetery. Over the years additional land was added and some given to the county for county road purposes. In 1884 five acres was sold to Clatsop County for a county cemetery needed for indigent burials. The abandoned Clatsop County Cemetery/Pauper' Cemetery in now a part of the city owned property. City Council minutes in June, 1897 changed the name of Clatsop cemetery to "Ocean View Cemetery." Also in 1897, one of the most eminent Eastern landscape gardeners, Mr. E. W. Bordich of Boston drew up a beautiful design and landscape plan for improvements to the new cemetery. In January, 1927 the graves in the original plot of the cemetery (south and east of the new plot) were "relocated" because it had been abandoned for many years and graves and markers were lost by the unsightly undergrowth and brush. Early records are either non-existent or lacking in information. Records have been preserved since 1903. Astoria Park and Recreation department maintains a public website developed from the cemetery records it has which includes date of burial and plot location information with a corresponding map.
