JAMES STEEN SCULPTURE ON DAUGHTER GERTIE STEEN’S GRAVE.
Carroll Chronicle April 3, 1896-James Steen, our town’s distinguished artist, has been at work for two months past on his master piece in art. It was cut from a large block of celebrated Grafton stone and shows in life-size the figures mentioned in Isaiah where is recorded: “The lion and the lamb shall lie down together and the child shall lead the way.” The work is not a copy of anything but is the artist’s conception. A lioness lies in repose; the lion stands over her; between his front feet, in conscious security, lies the lamb; sitting beside the group is the figure of a child, with one arm thrown trustfully over the lion, her hand holding a cross. It is a fine piece of work and well worth seeing. Mr. Steen has placed it in the Carrollton cemetery, at the grave of his little girl.
