Established in 1904.
Tom L. Johnson was elected Mayor of Cleveland in 1900 and viewed Erie Street Cemetery, located downtown, to be counter to his vision of what the city should be. The land was viewed as being worth millions of dollars for development and as a streetcar turnaround and road extension. As a solution, the city passed legislation to purchase land in Warrensville Township to create a new city cemetery, Highland Park Cemetery. At the same time, a separate cemetery was created nearby for the burial of the indigent, Cleveland Memorial Park (or Potters Field). The receiving vault at Highland Park serves both cemeteries. The cemetery opened in 1904 and the chapel, mausoleum, and crematorium were built in 1926-7. This was the first municipally owned and operated mausoleum and crematorium in the United States.
*** Burials listed in the interment records as Section 300 are buried in Potters Field (Cemetery ID #2557318)
*** Death Certificates listing cremation at Highland Park will need to be confirmed for burial location as these do not appear in the interment records.
*** There are thousands of spelling errors in the Cleveland City interment records. Please conduct partial name searches before creating new memorials. Many duplicates created are only one letter off.
The cemetery is located in the City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, and is # 15502 (Highland Park Mausoleum and Cemetery) in "Ohio Cemeteries 1803-2003", compiled by the Ohio Genealogical Society.
The cemetery is registered with the Ohio Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing (ODRE) as Highland Park Cemetery with registration license number CGR.0000982791.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) feature ID for the cemetery is 1041566 (Highland Park Cemetery).
