Cedar Hill Cemetery was established in 1849 in Frankford, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, between the Frankford Terminal and Wissinoming Park.
An eastern extension to Cedar Hill Cemetery (sometimes referred to as "East Cedar Hill Cemetery" was later added on the opposite side of Frankford Avenue (the first recorded burial was in October 1887). It is, in fact, part of Cedar Hill Cemetery. Its sections are numbered; the main part's sections are lettered. Anyone who died before October 1887 who is found buried in the eastern extension of Cedar Hill Cemetery was reinterred from another cemetery.
Three other cemeteries are adjacent to Cedar Hill. To the north, across East Cheltenham Avenue, is a sibling cemetery, North Cedar Hill Cemetery, which has lettered sections. Another cemetery, Frankford Friends New Burial Ground, is adjacent to North Cedar Hill. Mount Carmel Cemetery is at Frankford Avenue and East Cheltenham Avenue.
The open entrances to North Cedar Hill Cemetery and the main part of Cedar Hill Cemetery are directly across the street from each other on East Cheltenham Avenue. The historic gatehouse entrance to Cedar Hill Cemetery is at the intersection of Frankford Avenue and Bridge Street (Bustleton Avenue). The entrance to the eastern extension is at the intersection of Frankford Avenue and East Cheltenham Avenue.
