Irvin Cemetery
Rochester, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, USA
This cemetery spans 5.96 acres and is accessed via Davidson Drive, which is blocked off at the dead end to prevent cars from entering the cemetery. Parking is available on the left side of the street in front of a residence. Located at 9 Kay Drive, the cemetery is poorly maintained, with challenging terrain that includes steep grades. Only about one-third of the area has been mowed and cleaned recently. The flat markers are not maintained with weed whacking, and the overgrown vegetation obscures most of the upright markers, making them difficult to view. Additionally, there are spiders among the plants, which discouraged me from reaching into the foliage to take photos.
A woman walking her two dogs mentioned that there is no active management overseeing the cemetery, and the last burial took place over 25 years ago. Only a few local residents volunteer to mow parts of the grounds, unlike larger, well-maintained cemeteries that benefit from regular upkeep. Despite these efforts, the impact of high fuel costs is a concern for those volunteering. The cemetery isn't entirely neglected or abandoned, as there are individuals who attempt to maintain it, though challenges remain.
For anyone planning to visit, it is recommend to wear hiking or construction boots and jeans for protection. If you intend to move any foliage, gardening gloves are advisable.
