Kelsey Cemetery was created in 1902 and gifted in 1972 to families of the Kelsey settlement as a resting place for those who sought refuge from religious intolerance. Specifically, the cemetery was consecrated to receive the mortal remains of pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, their descendants and friends. Abraham O. Woodruff, a member of the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, designed Kelsey's layout to provide a safe place for converts to the gospel in the Southern States. Hundreds of people flocked to the area, and for decades, Kelsey was the center of Church activities. In 1906, 40% of all church members in Texas lived in or near Kelsey. Historical memorabilia is housed in the Heritage Center, which was dedicated Sept. 1, 2018, to honor the sacrifices of the early Saints who settled in Texas.
