The land for the cemetery was acquired 7/31/1922 with 7.175 acres.

The stone entrance pillar on Arlington Avenue reads ‘St. Peter Cemetery,' but this is a historic name for one section of the cemetery formerly maintained by St. Peter Parish (South Side). The Diocese of Pittsburgh now recognizes the entire site as St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery (Arlington Avenue). All modern parish, diocesan, and funeral‑home records list this cemetery under the St. Joseph name.
