Shady Lane is a beautiful cemetery that has fallen on hard times. A former owner looted the perpetual care fund, leaving no money to pay for upkeep and maintenance. The property was sold in a tax sale to someone who thought it was undeveloped. After discovering it was a cemetery, he completely abandoned the property.
After many years of neglect, roads in the cemetery had deteriorated, trees had died and fallen, and weeds and dirt had swallowed grave sites. However, community volunteers have stepped forward to rescue the cemetery. Local organizations, businesses, and individuals, using their own equipment, are investing sweat equity to honor those who came before, particularly the many veterans buried at the cemetery.
As of January, 2022, the Friends of Shady Lane Cemetery was incorporated as a Pennsylvania nonprofit corporation. The organization is dedicated to raising funds to address major issues, such as repairing the roads in order to maintain access to the cemetery. The group is also organizing volunteer labor to work throughout the growing season, cutting grass and trimming weeds. Partial records have been located and are being used to help families find the burial sites of loved ones. Finally, the Friends of Shady Lane organization is publicizing the stories of those buried in the cemetery, sharing local history with the community.
Anyone interested in Shady Lane Cemetery can find further information on the web page or in the organization's Facebook group. The group can be contacted at [email protected].
