Woodland Cemetery
Ashland, Hanover County, Virginia, USA
Woodland Cemetery is located at 11310 Hanover Avenue in Ashland, VA. It was established in 1862 during the War Between the States and is still currently in use.
In 1862, soldiers were suffering from various diseases and were dying in makeshift area hospitals. A place was needed to bury them. As a result, this cemetery was established and many of the war time confederate dead are buried there. Only two of these soldiers have headstones listing their names. The rest have unmarked 6x6 inch blocks noting grave locations. Although there is a dedicated area in the cemetery where they are all buried, there is no way to know each soldier's exact grave location.
There is a 4-sided marker listing the names of all the confirmed soldiers buried there. The GPS coordinates listed for these individuals will take you to this marker which is in front of the Confederate burial area.
