Established in south-central Wise County, Cottondale is one of the oldest settlements in the area. Platted in 1875 by landowner B. F. Banks, the original cemetery was located on private property, but most graves have since been moved to the active site.

The current Cottondale Cemetery was established in 1885 off Farm to Market Road 2123, behind the Cottondale Community Chapel (the former schoolhouse until 1933). Divided into four sections with a central driveway and numbered walkways, the cemetery features a map and directory at the gate, as well as a memorial marker for George "Machine Gun Kelly" Barnes.

The grounds are maintained by the Cottondale Cemetery Association, which hosts an annual potluck luncheon and business meeting on the last Sunday in April. The association looks forward to next year's gathering to honor and support this heritage site and welcomes all local residents of Cottondale to attend.
