Carver a cemetery in Shreveport is the final resting place of many prominent African Americans in the city's civil rights movement.
Carter Memorial Cemetery was established in the 1950s and has great significance in Shreveport's history, as many of the city's business leaders, educators, ministers, and veterans are buried amidst 80+ acres of rolling hills.
Carver Memorial Cemetery was once located outside of the city limits of Shreveport, but as time passed Shreveport's boundaries expanded to eventually encompass the cemetery that has managed to maintain the ambiance found in the northwest Louisiana countryside.
There are graves in Carver Memorial Cemetery that are much older than the official creation of the cemetery in the early 1950s, and bodies from cemeteries have been reinterred at Carver Memorial Cemetery to make room for progress. For example, the Fairfield Methodist Church applied to the Caddo District Court in 1959 and asked for the graves in the church's cemetery to be moved to Carver Memorial. 325 bodies, with graves dated as early as 1875, were reinterred and the graves of "unidentified persons were grouped around a common monument.
The cemetery has been described as a perpetual care cemetery, established to make people proud to be buried in such a peaceful setting. It has also been described as handsome and artistic, complete with picnic grounds and a public chapel.
