Lakeland's first municipal cemetery was purchased for $600 in 1885. Mayor John D. Torrence designed the layout of the 27-acre cemetery and later became the first person buried there in 1886. Lakeview Cemetery is bordered by Tiger Flowers Cemetery to the north, and Roselawn Cemetery to the south, across East Parker Avenue. By 1911, most burial plots at Lakeview were sold out, prompting the city to begin planning a new cemetery. Burials at Lakeview take place infrequently.
