St. Joseph and St. Anne Cemeteries were united on June 1, 1947, under the name of Holy Cross Cemetery.

The forerunners of Holy Cross Cemetery were the "new" St. Joseph Cemetery, established in 1889, and the adjacent St. Anne's Parish Cemetery, established in 1893. Prior to 1889, burials were made in Old St. Joseph Cemetery, but by 1911 the old cemetery had fallen into disrepair and all remains were exhumed and reinterred in the new cemetery (source: Escanaba Morning Press, November 12, 1910; and May 23 to May 28, 1911).
