Add PhotosAccess is by a long dirt lane on the east side of Schroder Road, north of Beamsville-Webster Road, and south of State Route 242. It is difficult to see the cemetery from the road. The cemetery is fenced in but not mowed on any regular basis. There is a gate at the front of the cemetery.
Many of the stones were unreadable and no longer upright back in the 1960s, so the condition of the cemetery has probably deteriorated even more now. At one time there was a pile of broken stones that had sunk so far into the ground that they could not be pried up [db30]. There are many children buried here.
Some of the birth dates have been calculated by using an on-line website, and some dates and/or ages and other information has come from several genealogical websites and family histories, and therefore some information may be incorrect. Any mistakes and/or inaccuracies are purely by accident as every effort has been made to provide correct information.
There are three known lists of inscriptions of this cemetery: Ken Finton's list of 1958-1959 that was incomplete; Anita Short's of 1964, but several stones were missed at that time; and the Jones-Ross list that was made at a later time that has several names misspelled and/or misread. This record here combines all three lists that were used during a personal visit to the cemetery to read the stones.
Photos were taken during that visit in September 1990 of all of the stones that could be found at that time. Film was still being used then, so multiple stones may appear in one photo. The cemetery inscription lists were used to help identify the deteriorating stones by their locations, so it is possible that mistakes were made.
This area was platted by Jacob Hartle and John Miller (hence the cemetery's name) in June of 1819, and named Waynesburg. It is a good example of what happened to many small towns that sprung up in the 1800s. The town had 44 lots, five streets and three alleys, but no records can be found that shows any of the lots being sold and it seems no houses were ever built in the historical village. All that remains from that historic era is the Hartle-Miller Cemetery.
The cemetery is located in Richland Township, Darke County, Ohio and is #2765 (Hartle Cemetery / Miller Cemetery) in "Ohio Cemeteries 1803-2003", compiled by the Ohio Genealogical Society.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) feature ID for the cemetery is 1806168 (Hartle Cemetery / Miller Cemetery).
