On a hillside surrounded by Palouse wheat fields, the cemetery was created by local pioneer George Cornwall after his wife, Phebe, died in 1882. The way to Mount Hope is aptly named Valley Chapel Road, since its most recognizable feature is the tiny white chapel (built in 1884) on the cemetery's northern edge.
