The cemetery was established in December 1862 under the direction of Colonel Patrick Edward Connor. The first funeral services were held for soldiers who fell during the Bear River Massacre. The cemetery honors soldiers from the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam Conflict. There are also approximately 54 Prisoners of War buried at the cemetery from Word War I and II.

The Fort Douglas Post Cemetery comprises 3.26 acres overlooking the beautiful Salt Lake Valley. Transferred from the U.S. Army to the National Cemetery Administration in 2019, the cemetery is located next to the University of Utah research park and the Fort Douglas history museum.
