Los Gatos Memorial Park is the principal burial ground serving the Los Gatos community, situated at 2255 Los Gatos-Almaden Road in San Jose, California, on more than 30 acres of gently sloping terrain with views toward the Santa Cruz Mountains.
The cemetery traces its origins to the late 1880s, when the growing town of Los Gatos recognized the need for a dedicated burial ground outside the town center. On December 9, 1889, a group of Odd Fellows Lodge members formed the Los Gatos Cemetery Association, with J. H. Lyndon serving as its first president. An 1889 notice in the Los Gatos Weekly News described the newly laid-out grounds, noting that family lots measured 20 by 40 feet — reflecting the Victorian tradition of purchasing large family plots where multiple generations could be interred together beneath a shared monument.
By the mid-20th century the cemetery had adopted the name Los Gatos Memorial Park, reflecting a broader postwar trend among American cemeteries toward park-style grounds with open lawns and uniform markers. In 1997 the surrounding area was annexed into the city limits of San Jose, though the cemetery has continued to serve the Los Gatos community throughout.
Among the notable figures interred here are William Hewlett (1913–2001), co-founder of the Hewlett-Packard Company, and Steve Harwell (1967–2023), lead singer of the band Smash Mouth.
The cemetery participates annually in the Wreaths Across America program each December, honoring veterans buried on the grounds. It can be reached at (408) 356-4151.
