The Clay Street Cemetery was established in 1903, the same year the city of Fairbanks, Alaska was established on the banks of the Chena River. Here are buried the first pioneers who came from all over the world to the Fairbanks area, most seeking their fortune in gold. The cemetery was closed in 1938 and burials were begun at the nearby Birch Hill Cemetery. The last casket burial was in 1995 for a very special citizen of Fairbanks. In 1967, the great Chena River flood took away most of the original wooden markers, crosses and fences. In 1982, the cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and The Clay Street Cemetery Commission was formed. The members research those buried here and have replacement markers made and placed on the grave sites.
To reach the cemetery, take Noble Street to 7th Avenue and follow the brown Clay Street Cemetery sign to the end of the road and turn left onto Clay Street. There is a parking area across from the main entrance. Just inside the main entrance please visit our kiosk with a cemetery map, a list of burials and historical information.
For more information or questions please contact the Fairbanks City Clerk at [email protected] and reference Clay Street Cemetery or call the clerk's office at 907-459-6702.
