James Cemetery was originally located on the northeast corner of the intersection of what is now Green River Rd. and Lincoln Ave. in Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., Indiana. The cemetery was named after the James family who were some of the first settlers in Knight Township in Vanderburgh Co. From all records, the first burial in this cemetery was that of Archipus Gillett who died in 1813. The property was owned by William S. Gilbert who sold it in 1912 to Louis Weinsheimer who was a well-known property owner of Knight township. He had hopes that this corner would someday become a good commercial area, and in 1923, he had James cemetery, which according to records, show 29 graves removed to a cemetery called Aikens Landing Cemetery which was farther down on South Green River Road near the river. Aikens Landing Cemetery then become known as James Cemetery.
The cemetery is located in Knight Township (NE quadrant of the SE quadrant of the SE quadrant of Section 2, Township 7S, Range 10W) on the west side of S Green River Road about 0.1 miles south of the eastbound lanes of I-69.
Indiana Cemetery Locations, Volume 4, published by the Indiana Genealogical Society (April 2009), gives the primary cemetery name as James Cemetery.
The cemetery is listed in the Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and in the State Historical Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) with Cemetery Record Number CR-82-33 (James).
