The South Cemetery contains both the New South and Old South Cemetery sections.

Older burial markers are located in the western half of the cemetery while modern and current burials occupy the eastern section. A gravel lane traverses the historic section of the grounds from north to south in order to provide access from Burroughs Road to the former hearse house (now vacant).

The cemetery sits on 6.7 acres. The earliest death date is c. 1784. In 2003 there were approximately 500+ stones.

The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as BXB.800 South Cemetery.

This cemetery is referred to as GR2 South Cemetery in the "Vital Records of Boxborough Massachusetts to the end of the year 1849".
