The Calvary Cemetery is a Catholic cemetery and is located west of Burlington. The land was purchased on March 5, 1883 and a deed transferred the land from Orson and Kate Kent to L. M. Fink of Leavenworth, for $100. Description of the land is: Commencing 53 1/3 rods north of the southwest corner of section 21, township 21, range 15E, thence east 60 rods, thence north 13 1/3 rods, thence west 60 rods, thence south to place of beginning.
The cemetery, itself, sits back from the road. Entrance is made from the west through a very attractive gate. Sitting in the middle of the cemetery towards the back are the statues with a circle drive going around the statues' location.
Calvary Cemetery is divided into two sections: The old section, which runs from the far west end to even with the center monument, and the new section, which runs from east of the center monument to the east end of the cemetery. For locations, the NW quadrant is the old section north of the road, and the SW quadrant is the old section south of the road. The NE quadrant is the new section north of the road, and the SE quadrant is the new section south of the road.
In the old section, rows 1-11 are divided into four lots of 20' x 15' both to the north and the south of the road. Rows 12-14 are divided into three lots each, to make room for the circle drive. Each lot contains 5 plots each. The single monuments on the far western edge constitute row 1, and the rows are numbered accordingly from west to east, with row 14 being even with the center monument.
In the new section, it is divided into larger sections of 10 lots, each 76' x 24', and the lots themselves are 16' x 12' and contain 4 plots each, with the exception of lots #3 and #6 on the northern edge of each, which are 12' x 12' and contain 3 plots each. The sections are designated by letters; the sections south of the road are labeled A thru E (from west to east); the sections north of the road are labeled F thru J (from east to west). Sections E and F only contain 5 lots each, as they are near the eastern boundary of the cemetery.
