Founded in 1857 on a 40-acre tract, the town of Black Jack served as a stop along the Santa Fe Trail. The community's civic life centered on the Black Jack Presbyterian Church, constructed in 1850 on a five-acre parcel deeded by M.A. O'Neill. The Black Jack Cemetery was officially platted north of the church and dedicated by the church on June 26, 1874, serving as a replacement for the original town burial site which is now known as the Old Black Jack Cemetery.
While the town was largely abandoned in the 1870s after the Santa Fe Railroad diverted travel to nearby Wellsville, the cemetery remained in general use by the local community until the church disbanded around 1926.
